The Internet was started way back in the 1960s when the United States military agencies created a network of computers to be able to communicate more effectively. Around the mid 1990s, Internet reached the common man as. Internet was commercialized as an international network. From then till now, Internet has gone through sea changes and is now an integral part of human life. It is estimated that more than a quarter of the world population now uses Internet.
Internet, also called the World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a part of modern life. We cannot think of life beyond the Internet. It provides a gateway to a vast wealth of information and knowledge and the uses of Internet are limitless. From children to adults, people in any age group find the Web useful in some way or the other. If someone wants to cook a Blueberry Cheese Cake, all it takes is a few clicks of the mouse and a few typed words and thousands of websites clamor with each other to provide the best recipe!
Internet was initially used for sharing of knowledge. The modern Internet users have converted it to a cash cow. Internet provides more than ample opportunities to earn revenue. People love online shopping. They go to the desired site, choose the product and pay online and the product is home delivered. Our sedentary lifestyle has a new reason to sit still.
Emails have made communication faster. The age of snail mails is almost over. People sitting in one corner of the world communicate with their friends and relatives in another corner of the world through emails and all it takes is a few moments. In fact, emails are also slowly becoming obsolete. People don’t have time to write long mails. They use the social networking sites to leave a line or two that declares their present status. And who can forget chats? It is like conversing with someone as having a live conversation sitting in front of one another. The webcams play a big part in this. Conventional chat has now given way to video chat. There seems to be no end to the applications of the Web.
There are some negative aspects too. Pornography has become rampant. Adult sites offer videos and images free of cost and these are accessible to everyone. Children and adults alike are falling prey to these websites. Chatting with uninvited guests lead to major complications and we have had more than a few cases like that. There is information overload on the Web. For every search, thousands of results are displayed that confuse the users. The Web is becoming an industry where everyone is fighting for every inch of space.

Despite all the criticisms, it has to be admitted that the Web is one of the best things that has happened with us. Through the Web, the world has become one common place where we have become global citizens. Responsible use of the Web can only bring out positives.
